Sleep is crucial for good health, well-being, and the ability to participate in daily life. Sleep problems are common and affect people with dementia and their relatives. The overarching objective of the SOVA research project is to adapt and test the DREAMS-START intervention (Dementia RElAted Manual for Sleep; STrAtegies for RelaTives) for Swedish conditions with the aim of reducing sleep problems in people with dementia and their relatives. The intervention, developed in the UK, has proven acceptable, clinically effective, and cost-effective there. Duties The person we are seeking will work on the SOVA research project. The person will work on adapting and testing DREAMS-START for Swedish conditions. Tasks include recruiting and maintaining contact with study participants, collecting data through interviews and questionnaires, analyzing and reporting data, and compiling scientific literature. The person will also work with patient and citizen participation, which is a central part of the project. Tasks also include disseminating research results through scientific publications and other channels and actively participating in the research group's seminars and meetings. Other tasks regarding teaching and administration at the Department of Women's and Children's Health may be added (max. 20%). If so, the employment period will be extended accordingly. Diversity of Plasmid-Dependent Phages in Aquatic Ecosystems
Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver of AMR spread is the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids — mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but largely overlooked tool in controlling resistance gene transmission. This PhD project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025) and is based at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, SLU Uppsala. The overarching aim of ECOPHARM is to decipher the mechanisms driving PDP interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on antibiotic resistance gene transmission in aquatic environments. As a PhD student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of plasmid-dependent phages in aquatic ecosystems. Project Description The project aims to design and manufacture the next generation of coronagraphs for space telescopes and large ground-based telescopes. A coronagraph is an instrument in a telescope that blocks a bright light source to reveal nearby dim light sources. For direct observations of Earth-like exoplanets, one must overcome an extremely high contrast in brightness within a very small viewing angle. The brightness difference between star and planet can be on the order of 10^10, and the angle between the planet and star is a few tenths of an arcsecond. To make this possible, you will, with support from your supervisors and in collaboration with international colleagues in astronomy and instrument design, design and manufacture micro-optical components that use destructive interference to extinguish the star's light. As a doctoral student, you are part of the Swedish Space Research School (SSRS), which aims to strengthen Sweden's long-term competence supply, provide coordinated doctoral education, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration within the Swedish space sector. Currently, the group has a strong focus on studies of electronic structure, magnetism, spin transport, and X-ray spectroscopic studies of complex magnetic materials. New theoretical models will be developed and implemented within the project, which also involves close collaboration with experiments. Job Responsibilities The research will focus on the application of density functional theory (DFT) to study magnetic properties of two-dimensional materials, so-called 2D magnets and heterostructures created by different types of 2D magnets including altermagnets. The PhD student will perform calculations of various types of magnetic exchange interaction parameters to be used in Monte Carlo simulations and atomistic spin dynamics. Effects beyond single-electron physics, where so-called pronounced electronic correlation effects are important, will be studied with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). One of the main tasks will be calculations of spectra for X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism for these materials. This is planned to be done using DMFT and similar many-body methods. Further development of existing methods will be performed to enable calculations of resonant, inelastic spectra. The spectroscopic methods will be used to compare with available experimental results, taken at, for example, MAX IV. Finally, high-capacity calculations using an in-house Python-based platform will be conducted to find new 2D magnets and also use data to develop machine learning models to predict exchange interactions and magnetic transition temperatures. PhD in Chemistry with Focus on Enzymatic Modification of Hemicellulose
Department of Molecular Sciences Third-cycle subject area: Chemistry Description of the doctoral project Do you want to work on a project aimed at replacing fossil sources with forest raw materials for the production of biomaterials? Are you interested in exploring molecular interactions at the atomic level using advanced analytical instruments? Do you want to work with a team of researchers who share these interests? If so, this could be the PhD position for you. The overall goal of this PhD project is to enzymatically modify glycans from hemicellulose to produce bio-based crosslinkers for applications in adhesives, hydrogels, and other crosslinked materials. However, many materials we consider bio-based, such as wood fiberboards, hydrogels, and stabilizers from non-fossil polymers, still rely on crosslinkers of fossil origin that are often highly toxic chemicals. Fiberboards used in furniture, construction, and insulation typically contain approximately 9% glue consisting of urea formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen, and its emissions from fiberboards are a major concern. Oxidative enzymes will be applied to hemicellulose substrates, such as xyloglucan and glucomannan, to generate aldehyde and ketone functions on the sugar ring in parallel with partial degradation to oligosaccharides. The expected outcome is a collection of non-toxic, bio-based crosslinkers that can potentially replace formaldehyde and similar fossil-based crosslinkers. About the position You will join a research group conducting research in organic chemistry and biotechnology with a focus on structural analysis of enzymes and carbohydrate substrates using NMR spectroscopy, as well as developing new methods for studying interactions between proteins and carbohydrates using NMR spectroscopy. The project involves extensive laboratory work and will utilize advanced characterization techniques including NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to determine the structural composition of the crosslinkers and crosslinked materials. To achieve these goals while maintaining a productive and enriching environment, the project includes supervision in organic chemistry, enzymology, and wood technology. The project aims to develop mathematically sound methods for uncertainty quantification in deep learning, with particular focus on large language models, based on probability theory, statistical inference, and probabilistic modeling. The focus is on quantifying and evaluating uncertainty in predictions derived from medical records and integrating these uncertainties into subsequent probabilistic time-to-event models. Department of Molecular Sciences Doctoral Program: Chemistry Description of the doctoral project: Would you like to work on a project aimed at replacing fossil sources with forest raw materials for the production of biomaterials? Are you interested in exploring molecular interactions at the atomic level using advanced analytical instruments? Would you like to work with a whole group of researchers who share these interests? The overall goal of this doctoral project is to enzymatically modify glycans from hemicellulose to produce bio-based crosslinkers for applications in adhesives, hydrogels, and other crosslinked materials. Many materials we consider bio-based, such as fiberboard, hydrogels, and stabilizers from non-fossil polymers, are still dependent on crosslinkers of fossil origin that are often highly hazardous chemicals. Fiberboard for furniture, construction, and insulation typically contains approximately 9% adhesive made of urea-formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen, and its emissions from fiberboard are a major problem. Oxidative enzymes will be used on hemicellulose substrates, such as xyloglucans and glucomannans, to obtain aldehyde and ketone functions on sugar rings in parallel with partial degradation into oligosaccharides. The expected result is a collection of non-toxic, bio-based crosslinkers that could potentially replace formaldehyde and similar fossil-based crosslinkers. Type 2 diabetes is an increasing public health problem worldwide. The disease is characterized by impaired insulin production combined with insulin resistance. Obesity plays an important role in the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. In addition to storing energy, adipose tissue also functions as an endocrine organ and communicates with other organs, particularly the brain. The overarching goal of this project is to identify new mechanisms in the interaction between the brain and peripheral tissues, particularly adipose tissue and the gastrointestinal tract, which may contribute to insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. We use various methods: - Brain imaging and imaging of other organs in humans in vivo, during hormonal/metabolic tests - Investigation of dynamic regulation of various hormone systems in the development of type 2 diabetes - Experimental studies of metabolism and other functions in human adipose tissue. These include cellular signaling, pharmacology, and omics methods. We will perform analysis of tissue samples with respect to, among other things, morphology, nerve activity and neurotransmitters, cell differentiation, glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin signaling, and expression of relevant genes important for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Clinical examinations with hormone challenge tests are conducted on patients and healthy individuals, often with simultaneous imaging of activity in the brain and other organs, using PET and MRI techniques. These studies are expected to lead to new methods for prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Duties: The primary responsibility for a PhD student is to conduct research projects and doctoral training courses (30 credits). Brief project description: Sex ratios and the evolution of sex chromosomes Sex chromosomes are of fundamental importance in biology, but our understanding of their evolution remains limited. Genetic conflicts, such as meiotic drive affecting sex ratios, have long been linked to the rapid evolution of sex chromosomes and may thus contribute to divergence and speciation. This project studies a plant genus, willows (Salix), which are dioecious. Within Salix, a biased sex ratio favoring females is common and high turnover of sex chromosomes has been described. Project Description Power transformers are the backbone of modern power grids, and their reliability is crucial for stable energy supply. A key component in the insulation system is transformer oil. Between the windings, high oil flow is desired to improve cooling performance, but simultaneously the velocity must be limited to avoid faults caused by flow electrification—the accumulation of static charge as a result of oil flow. There are simple models that describe the phenomenon, but the underlying physics remains largely unknown. Since direct measurements inside a functioning transformer are impossible, there is an urgent need for new laboratory methods and a modern theoretical framework to understand how charge is generated, transported, and released in these systems. This doctoral project offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of fluid mechanics, electrochemistry, and soft matter physics, addressing a problem that encompasses both deep scientific challenges and significant industrial relevance. Classical models such as the Helmholtz–Smoluchowski equation do not work for transformer oils due to their extremely high resistivity, the significant surface conductivity of cellulose, possible electrorheological effects, and the oil's penetration into the porous solid material. These factors create a rich and unexplored physical landscape where new insights await discovery. The goal of the project is to develop a predictive model for flow electrification, supported by precise laboratory experiments. You will design experimental setups, measure flow currents under controlled conditions, and build theoretical tools that capture the complex electrohydrodynamics at the interface between oil and cellulose. The result will be a framework with a small number of governing parameters that can be used to assess and mitigate electrification risks in real transformers. The project, funded by Hitachi Energy AB, will be conducted in close collaboration with the industrial partner and their research organization. Access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise will be ensured, although special rules may apply regarding publication and intellectual property (IP). The PhD student will analyze modern and ancient genomic data from humans and domesticated animals to understand their demographic history, trace migrations, and identify signs of selection.
