The research will be conducted at Günther Lab within the Human Evolution Program at the Department of Organismal Biology (Evolutionary Biology Center, Uppsala University, Sweden). The Günther group specifically studies human prehistory in Europe and the genomic history behind animal domestication, while developing and improving population genomic and bioinformatic methods for analyzing paleogenomic data. The group is funded by research grants from Formas, the Swedish Research Council, and the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond). The Human Evolution Program has broad interests in population genetics and human evolution, providing many opportunities for collaboration with postdoctoral researchers and PhD students working on related projects. The program is also part of Center for the Human Past. The research environment is international, with English as the working language. The PhD student will analyze modern and ancient genomic data from humans and domesticated animals to understand their demographic history, trace migrations, and identify signs of selection. The work includes bioinformatic analysis using Uppsala University's computing cluster, implementation of scripts and running population genetics software, as well as programming and statistical analysis. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for doctoral level education, you must have completed a degree at advanced level in biology, bioinformatics, or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent work of at least 15 higher education credits, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. We are seeking a person with strong knowledge and experience in bioinformatics analysis and good knowledge of population genetics, with experience working with paleogenomics. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as: Good analytical ability, good collaboration and communication skills. Ability to work independently and take own initiatives. Good planning and organizational ability, responsibility. Good ability to express yourself well in spoken and written English. Desirable/Meriting Qualifications Experience with large-scale population genomic analyses, statistics, bioinformatics, programming, and implementation of bioinformatic pipelines is meriting. About the Position Doctoral education comprises four years of full-time study. The position may be combined with teaching (maximum 20%) which extends the employment by the corresponding time. Provisions for PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 chap. §§ 1-7 and in the University's rules and guidelines Regler - UU.
