Postdoctoral Researcher in Biomedical Engineering
Popis:
at the Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Materials Science, Uppsala University Fixed-term full-time position for two years with start date as soon as possible or by agreement The Department of Materials Science aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education focused on materials science solutions to important societal challenges. About the Division The Division of Biomedical Engineering is part of the Department of Materials Science at the Ångström Laboratory. We conduct research on the development of miniaturized platforms and evaluation of new materials in interaction with biological systems to understand underlying principles. For us, it is equally important to study how materials affect biological processes as how biological processes affect materials. Our ambition is to promote a dynamic teaching and research environment that is internationally recognized for its expertise in linking basic research with clinical applications. This position is a recruitment to Patrick Sandoz's research group at the Division of Biomedical Engineering. As a group member, you will play an important role in establishing new research activities within microphysiological systems and biomaterials to study cancer immunobiology, and specifically properties of the tumor microenvironment. Project Description Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and many types show resistance to standard treatments, presenting significant challenges for healthcare and research. There is growing interest in microsystems that can replicate the local physiology of tumors and thereby provide a platform for identifying and optimizing therapeutic candidates. Our group specializes in developing technologies to investigate the multicellular environment in three-dimensional microtumor models. The project specifically focuses on understanding how the tumor microenvironment (TME) undergoes architectural remodeling—including changes in extracellular matrix composition, tissue mechanics, and spatial organization—and how these physical changes interact with immunosuppressive mechanisms that allow tumors to escape immune surveillance. Responsibilities This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the research direction, where your contribution is crucial to establishing the laboratory's infrastructure, building experimental methods and tools, and defining best practices for tumor-on-chip fabrication, biomechanical sensing, and immune function characterization. You will work closely with the research leader, other postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students, and external collaborators to advance research goals and generate high-impact results. In addition to research, the role includes mentoring doctoral students, master's students, and project students, as well as communicating research results through scientific articles in well-established scientific journals and presentations at international conferences. Some involvement in teaching may also be included. You are also expected to contribute to applications for external research funding. Qualifications To qualify for a postdoctoral position, you must hold a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctorate. The degree must be completed by the time of the employment decision. Applicants who completed their doctorate within three years prior to the application deadline have priority for the position. The three-year period is calculated from the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been completed earlier. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, assignments within labor organizations, etc. This position requires a doctoral degree in one of the following fields: materials science, biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, immunoengineering, microsystems/applied biotechnology, or an equivalent degree in a related area. Well-documented experience in the development of microphysiological systems or biosensor fabrication. Excellent oral and written English skills, and very strong skills in writing scientific publications. A postdoctoral position is initially for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year. The three-year period may be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, union assignments, etc. Desirable/Meriting Qualifications It is meriting to have documented knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: CAD design and microfabrication in cleanroom facilities Hydrogel formulation, chemical cross-linking, biomechanical sensing Biological staining and advanced light microscopy techniques Culture and characterization of mammalian cells, preferably cancer or immune cells Applications may be written in English. We will review applications continuously during the application period and conduct interviews on an ongoing basis. About the Position The position is time-limited for 2 years in accordance with the central collective agreement. Full-time position. Start date September 15, 2026, or by agreement. Work location: Uppsala For information about the position, contact: Dr. Patrick Sandoz, [email protected], or Karin Magnusson, [email protected] Submit your application no later than July 27, 2026, UFV-PA 2026/1723 Read the full announcement and apply for the position at uu.se/jobb. Open to All We focus on your qualifications, not your other circumstances. We are open to adapting the role or workplace according to your needs.
