PhD Student in Fire Safety Engineering with Focus on Evacuation Capability
Popis:
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading academic institutions. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our mission to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's living conditions. Description of Operations The Department of Building and Environmental Technology comprises several divisions, with the Fire Safety Engineering division being one of them. The department conducts research and education linked to society's needs for infrastructure and construction. As part of this, we also address safety aspects and develop methods to manage the consequences of fires and other similar disasters in society. Fire safety engineering research focuses on the physical and chemical processes involved in the initiation, growth, spread, and extinguishing of fires, interactions between fire and buildings, facilities, natural resources, etc., systems to prevent or detect fires or limit their consequences, as well as evacuation and human behavior during fires. The goal is to find cost-effective, sustainable, and innovative methods to keep damage to people, the environment, and property at an acceptable level. Work is typically conducted in smaller research groups dedicated to specific subject areas. However, the work is also characterized by an interdisciplinary approach with collaboration across subject boundaries and with colleagues in other departments at the university. The Fire Safety Engineering division consists of approximately 20 researchers, PhD students, and administrative staff. Most work in Lund, though some work from other locations, such as Campus Helsingborg. The work environment is characterized by commitment, collaboration, creativity, and personal responsibility. We strive for an unpretentious and inclusive work environment with balanced gender representation. Tasks are varied and stimulating, with good opportunities for professional development. Being a PhD Student As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. In short, you gain practice in critical and analytical thinking, learn to solve problems independently using appropriate methods, and develop research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your teaching abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by a supervisor. Your doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree. More information about being a PhD student at LTH can be found at lth.se. Subject and Project Description The PhD position is focused on the area of evacuation in emergency situations, with particular emphasis on people with disabilities. This is related to the English concept of egressibility, i.e., accessibility to evacuation opportunities for everyone. The PhD position is primarily focused on the collection and analysis of data related to the evacuation of vulnerable groups with the aim of facilitating their ability to manage an emergency situation. The project will involve a variety of methodological approaches (such as interviews, experiments with hypothetical scenarios, and AI-based modeling) to study human behavior in evacuation situations during emergencies. The PhD project is linked to an ongoing grant from the European Research Council on egressibility (ERC Consolidator Grant "Egressibility"). The research is conducted in connection with Helsingborg Safety Hub, which is located at Lund University's Campus Helsingborg. Work Responsibilities You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences. Your work may also include involvement in teaching and other departmental activities (maximum 20% of work time). You are also expected to participate in national and international conferences to present and discuss your research with others in the field. Qualifications To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below. Eligibility Requirements You meet the basic eligibility requirements for doctoral-level education if you have: completed a degree at an advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in another way. You meet the specific eligibility requirements for Fire Safety Engineering if you have: a fire engineering degree comprising 210 higher education credits, or a degree at an advanced level within a relevant subject area. Other Requirements To benefit from this doctoral education, the following are also required: strong initiative and ability to drive work forward strong ability to work independently and ability to formulate and approach scientific problems strong written and verbal communication skills good collaboration skills excellent English language proficiency, both spoken and written knowledge related to the evacuation field Merits The following are advantageous for this doctoral education: knowledge and experience related to the collection and analysis of data from the evacuation field previous thesis work related to the subject area What We Offer Lund University is a state authority, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation, and favorable occupational pension.
