Responsibilities You will primarily focus on your doctoral research, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral training courses, seminars, and conferences. You will be responsible for production and experimental characterization of self-assembling de novo-designed proteins, and will also participate in the selection of promising constructs and are expected to contribute to the overall design strategy. You will work closely with computational protein designers to establish an effective feedback process between experimental results and design strategy. Your responsibilities include: Screening and selection of de novo-designed proteins for characterization Protein expression and protein purification Design and production of novel protein assemblies with non-canonical amino acids with metal-binding properties Development of analysis methods for high-throughput screening Spectroscopic characterization of 2D protein self-assembly Cryo-electron microscopy of protein–metal assemblies Your responsibilities also include participation in teaching and other institutional work, but no more than 20 percent of working time. The department is responsible for courses in physical chemistry, NMR spectroscopy, and biophysical chemistry. Qualifications To be admitted and employed as a doctoral student, you must meet the requirements below. General Eligibility Requirements You meet the general eligibility requirements for doctoral-level education if you have: a completed degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or acquired equivalent knowledge in another way. Specific Eligibility for Biophysical Chemistry You meet the specific eligibility requirements if you have: a degree in engineering, a one-year master's degree, or another comparable degree with significant components in mathematics, molecular sciences, and life sciences. Depending on your doctoral research project, advanced-level courses in physical chemistry, biophysical chemistry, protein science, and/or molecular spectroscopy may be required. Finally, you must be assessed to have the prerequisites to complete the training. Additional Requirements To benefit from this doctoral training, you also need: Experience in experimental protein characterization and biophysical measurements with quantitative data analysis Molecular understanding of protein structure and protein interactions Documented ability to work independently Scientific curiosity Good molecular understanding You should also have good analytical skills, be proactive, demonstrate collaborative ability, and be persistent Good ability to work independently and to formulate and address research problems Good written and oral communication skills Very good spoken and written proficiency in English Meritorious Qualifications The following are considered meritorious for this doctoral training: Experience in recombinant protein production Experience in characterizing protein structure using cryo-electron microscopy Experience in experimental characterization and quantitative data analysis of protein self-assembly What We Offer Lund University is a government agency, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation, and a favorable occupational pension.
