One doctoral candidate in science, with admission to the doctoral subject biology One doctoral candidate in English, with admission to the doctoral subject English One doctoral candidate with a focus on Swedish language arts, with admission to either the doctoral subject literature studies or pedagogical work Research School on Subject Didactic Models in Primary School's Earlier Years (BEPPE) The BEPPE research school aims to contribute to more systematic knowledge about how some scientifically established, yet mutually different, subject didactic models function in different subjects and school contexts, and how they can be integrated into teacher education and primary school grades F-6. This means that as a doctoral candidate, you will research actual teaching in the primary school's earlier years, with close connections to teacher education and school practice. The research school is arranged jointly by Karlstad University and Gothenburg University, with a total of 9 doctoral candidates. We welcome applications from teacher educators, teachers in schools, or anyone else interested in researching teaching and learning in the advertised specializations. You may be at the beginning of your professional career – what is important is your interest in teaching, learning, and the development of schools in interaction with research. The BEPPE research school offers you a dynamic environment with opportunities to establish international networks, participate in conferences, and conduct stays abroad. For further information about the research school and its focus: BEPPE Subject Environments The research school is part of the subject didactic research environment at Karlstad University. This consists of Rose (Research on Subject-specific Education) and three subject didactic centers: CSL (Center for Language and Literature Didactics), CSD (Center for Social Science Subject Didactics), and SMEER (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research). The subject didactic perspective involves a particular interest in teaching and learning in subjects or subject areas. As a doctoral candidate, you will be affiliated with one of our subject didactic environments. Duties As a doctoral candidate, you will primarily engage in your own research training. Research training, which consists of 240 higher education credits (hp) for a doctoral degree and 120 hp for a licentiate degree, is an opportunity for studies with salary in combination with work and a chance to begin an academic career. As a doctoral candidate, you work independently and are prepared to contribute in various ways to the subject's and institution's work and development. You will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in your areas of interest together with others. It may, by agreement, be relevant to participate in teaching and administration, so-called institutional duties. Such work may comprise a maximum of 20% of full-time work. Work as a doctoral candidate gives you great freedom to plan and organize your work, which among other things requires commitment, drive, and the ability to structure your work to successfully complete a thesis. To contribute to a good working environment and support both the activities and your own development as a researcher, you are present and actively participate in the daily work and community. Eligibility and Admission To be admitted to research training, you must meet both general and specific eligibility requirements (the Higher Education Ordinance, chap. 7 § 35). General eligibility is held by those who have completed an advanced-level degree, completed course requirements of at least 240 hp, of which at least 60 hp at an advanced level, or who in another way within or outside the country have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge (the Higher Education Ordinance, chap. 7 § 39). Specific eligibility varies between subjects and requirements are specified in the current study plan. Depending on your educational background, admission may occur to different doctoral subjects with different study plans. Current study plans with specific requirements for specific eligibility are available at https://www.kau.se/forskning/forskarutbildning/forskarutbildningar/forskarutbildningsamnen In addition to general and specific eligibility, this position also requires good knowledge of a Nordic language (Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian) and English due to the nature of the research. Assessment Criteria: The assessment of eligible applicants is based on the following assessment criteria. Particular emphasis is placed on documented qualifications regarding quality of the qualifying thesis/paper quality of the submitted research plan and its relevance in relation to the research school's focus. Great emphasis is placed on intention to be present and participate in the research environment. personal qualities such as independence, perseverance, initiative-taking, and good collaboration skills. excellent knowledge of English It is meritorious to have your own teaching experience, primarily within primary school, secondly within other school forms. Conditions Following admission to doctoral-level education, a position as a doctoral candidate will be offered (the Higher Education Ordinance, chap. 5 § 3). The position covers four years of full-time studies with research only. If teaching or other institutional duties become relevant, the position will be extended for the corresponding time, up to a maximum of five years full-time. The position is time-limited for the first year and can thereafter be extended for a maximum of two years at a time (the Higher Education Ordinance chap. 5), starting October 1st or by agreement. Salary for the doctoral position follows a local collective agreement with fixed salary steps. Admission is conditional on the necessary decisions being made.
