Job Responsibilities Do you want to develop new knowledge about how mathematics teaching can be improved and students' mathematics learning promoted? As a PhD student in the graduate school AMTLR (Advancing research on the Mathematics Teaching-Learning Relationship), you will study the relationships between teaching and learning in mathematics. Education and skills development for mathematics teachers can lead to better teaching if it is based on a robust understanding of which characteristics of mathematics teaching actually lead to better learning. We also need to know how and why these characteristics promote mathematics learning, so that mathematics teaching can be adapted to different student groups, new knowledge content, and varying conditions. Within AMTLR, you will develop your competence to examine, design, and conduct research that contributes to answering how and why specific characteristics of mathematics teaching lead to specific types of mathematics learning. You will take a specially developed course package together with PhD students at Mälardalen University, Umeå University, and Linnaeus University. The course package addresses central aspects of research on the relationship between mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, you will be part of a research group that conducts research on this relationship at Mälardalen University. Institutional service may occur at a maximum of 20%, primarily in the form of teaching in mathematics didactics courses in teacher education programs. Eligibility Requirements To be admitted to education at doctoral level, the applicant must have general eligibility and the specific eligibility required by the subject, and the applicant must be assessed to have the ability otherwise necessary to benefit from the education. General eligibility for doctoral level education (according to HF 7 chap. § 39) is held by those who: have completed an exam at advanced level, have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or have acquired in some other way within or outside the country essentially equivalent knowledge. Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral level education in didactics is held by those who: have at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level with educational science relevance and have completed an independent work corresponding to 15 higher education credits with educational science relevance, or have acquired in some other way within or outside the country essentially equivalent knowledge. However, a copy of the original document (if in another language than above) must always be attached.
